Recently, after a few minutes in my Quicken program, a 'Close' message
appears in a window. Clicking on the 'Close' closes my session- very
annoying. I recently installed Symantec Internet Security. Please tell
me how to stop the 'Close' message from appearing. Thanks. |

It will be easier to assist you if you can say what version
of Windows you're using, what version of Quicken you're using,
and if you can exactly quote the error message.
It sounds like a message from the Windows Operating System,
and it may, indeed, have to do with a glitch related to your
recent installation of Symantec Internet Security. Have you
tried temporarily disabling the Symantec suite while you are
running Quicken? Doing so and reporting on the results would
be helpful, as well.

1. Windows Me
2. Quicken Home and Business 2001
3. With Symantec disabled, got another 'close' window- clicked on
'close' and the coomputer froze. Many minutes later an 'error in KRNL
386.exe' appeared. I restarted. Computer works. Have not gone to
Quicken again.

Thanks for the helpful information. If you could elaborate
on any other text accompanying the Close window and the
'error in KRNL' message, this would be even better. Usually
such messages have full sentences which say, e.g., "Quicken
has caused an error in KRNL386.exe". The more precise info
you can provide, the easier it is to research a solution.

That was helpful information. First I would recommend rebooting
your computer and running the ScanDisk and Defrag utilities.
These two should be run regularly. How often do you run them,
and how frequently do you reboot?
Errors involving KERNEL32.DLL can frequently be traced to a
hardware misconfiguration. Ensure your system hardware has
been properly installed and configured. Ensure there are no
resource conflicts on your system. I'm not personally familiar
with Windows ME, but I found this problem to be commonly
associated with that version of Windows. You'll need to locate
the Windows Device Manager to look for problems with hardware
installation, and look at Windows System Information to see
what, if any, resource conflicts you might have.
In other versions of Windows, you can get to Device Manager by
right-clicking on the My Computer icon, selecting Properties,
and then the Hardware tab to find the Device Manager.
To start System Information, do either of the following:
Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to
System Tools, and then click System Information.
Click Start, click Run, type msinfo32.exe in the Open box,
and then click OK.
Other advice I ran across was to uninstall and reinstall
Quicken, or uninstall and reinstall Windows...not what
you want to hear, I'm sure, nor would I recommend such a
radical solution at first.
Another person with similar problems noted that this only
occurred when he was using Quicken to connect with the
internet to download information or register the program.
Is this the case with you? Or is it happening when you're
not connecting to the internet?
Let me know what you learn from this, and where this takes you.

Scandisk works every time I have to unplug my computer. Defrag seemed
to work until today. CLOSE window made computer freeze. When booted
up, message appeared: "Msgrv32 has caused an error in KRNL.386.EXE.
Msgrv32 will now close. If you continue to have problems, try
resarting your computer." Clicked off, computer froze. When booted up
again, new Message: "Winoldap has caused an error in user.exe.
Winoldap will now close. If you continue, etc." Clicked that message
off, computer ok until now. Windows device manager and Windows system
information gives me no clues, as does msinfo32.exe.

You said you got the message:
"Msgrv32 has caused an error in KRNL.386.EXE. Msgrv32 will now close.
If you continue to have problems, try resarting your computer."
I don't know if you accidentally misspelled Msgsrv32, or if the message
and file is actually Msgrv32, but either way, there is a good chance
you have a virus, or at least some malicious adware.
I would strongly recommend you drag your ailing PC over to one or more
free online virus scanners:
AntiVir:
http://www.free-av.com/
BitDefender:
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php
Computer Associates:
http://www3.ca.com/virusinfo/virusscan.aspx
McAffee:
http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?
Panda:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
Symantec:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/
Trend Micro:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
You should also download, install and run the following:
Lavasoft AdAware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/
SpyBot Search and Destroy:
http://www.safer-networking.org
Spyware Blaster
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
And, as a preventive measure, download and install WinPatrol:
http://www.winpatrol.com/
I strongly suspect that one of the virus scans will detect
a trojan, and that you will derive great benefit from the
adware scanners as well.
Let me know where this takes you. If it resolves your problems
I'll post a formal answer in order to accept payment.

Nothing seems to work. It only seems to have gotten worse since I
started to work with you. My computer freezes when I click CLOSE. The
'Winoldap' and 'Rnaapp' messages appear when I reboot and I'm lucky if
I don't have to reboot again.
