Question ID: 438135
I cannot connect to a Toshibas pocket PC e310. I believe that I have
the firewall(s) turned off. I have windows XP and the PC recognizes
the e310 when I plug it in. I have updated the drive for the e310.
After a period of time, the e310 will not be recognized by the PC (it
beeps & goes away). It also will not recognize the e310 on bottup
(only when I plug it in).

Even when the PC recognozes e310 (see it in device manager), active
sync wis unable to connect to the e310.

Any suggestions?

Hi!!

I think that your problem is due the activesync version you are
running. Microsoft Activesync 4.1 is for for Windows Mobile 5.0
devices. See the first line of this page:
"Windows Mobile - ActiveSync 4.1 Download":
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/activesync41.mspx

Your Toshiba e310 has Microsoft's Pocket PC 2002 operating system, so
you should use ActiveSync 3.8 .
Download it from here:
"Windows Mobile - ActiveSync 3.8 Download":
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/activesync38.mspx

Please uninstall the activesync 4.1 and install the 3.8 version of it
and try. Let me know if this works in order to put this post in the
answer box and claim the price or to continue researching.

Thank you. Your comment made a lot of sense. I removed 4.1 and
installed 3.8. I tried a couple of ways.. reboot, reconnect e310, etc
but no luck so far. I disabled Zonealarm and the MS firewall (windows
XP). I'm worried that the e310 is set for infarred transmission, but
cannot tell for sure.

I made sure that e310 was listed in device manager. One possible hint
of problem is that e310 leaves from the device manager list. I hear a
sound & it's gone from the list. It is goes back on the list (XP
recognizes it)if I unplug it and plug it back again. The e310 is
connected to notebook PC via the USB connection.

Any help appreciated. Hope you can figure the puzzle & get the prize
(& tip!). I am sure it is difficult not seeing the details. Thanks.

Howdy pgj26-ga,

The manual for the e310 talks about a "USB SETUP TOOL" that one should
run. It should be located on the "Companion CD." Has that been run?
Thanks!

Aagin, another excellent suggestion. I might not have used this CD
after I had to reformat this PC (I lost the hard drive). It worked
before, but I probably set it up with this CD. I might have
mistakenly thought that all I needed was activesync. In other words,
I think you are right.

However, I have not been able to find the CD yet. I've been looking
off & on all day. I have also been checking the internet for the
download, etc. But no luck. You deserve the offered payment & if
this "USB setup tool" works, you deserve more for your expertice.
Thanks!

Thank you again. I have tried the driver update previously with no
luck yet. I will try it again because it makes sense that the driver
update is what the USB setup is all about. I think the setup also
loads activesync. Your link did work. I have tried to sync on all
three of my PCs (all have windows XP) with no luck. I now have a pdf
copy of the user manual so I am trying to be sure there is nothing
wrong with the e310 settings (infrared or something?) I think I have
ruled out firewall settings. I shut them off and none of my PC will
sync.

Again you have been very helpful, and you deserve payment for your time & expertice.

Hi!!

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to answer your question. I
hope you can find the solution with the tools you have in your hands
now.

To make the comments an official answer I will repost them here.

First thing you must check is the activesync version you are running.
Microsoft Activesync 4.1 is for for Windows Mobile 5.0 devices. See
the first line of this page:
"Windows Mobile - ActiveSync 4.1 Download":
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/activesync41.mspx

Your Toshiba e310 has Microsoft's Pocket PC 2002 operating system, so
you should use ActiveSync 3.8 . Download it from here:
"Windows Mobile - ActiveSync 3.8 Download":
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/activesync38.mspx

Please uninstall the activesync 4.1 and install the 3.8 version of it and try.

NOTE ABOUT THIS: I found that the e310 CD-ROM includes the activesync
3.5; you can try installing this specific version, download it from
here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/activesync35.mspx

See these pages also:
"Microsoft ActiveSync 3.5"
http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/activesync3.5.htm

"ActiveSync Versions FAQ":
http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/activesyncversions.htm

ADDITIONAL NOTE: This is a common advice for all ActiveSync versions:
" If you already have installed any AvantGo upgrades, you will need to
reinstall it from the desktop." MAy be this gives you a clue.

The next thing you must check is if you are using the correct USB
drivers for your PDA, see this:
Toshiba PDA USB Driver
for Windows XP, 2000, 98SE (v1.0.2.1; 09-03-2003; 663K):

Again I hope this helps you.

PS: Note that at the page where you can download the USB driver there
is a link to a Windows Pocket PC 2002 End User Update 3 for Toshiba
PPC e310/e740, this is a cumulative service pack, and includes all
updates that were part of EUU2.
See at this page:

One more thing, can you try with a different craddle?
