Do AWD vehicles consume a lot more gas than 4WD? meaning that 4WD you
can put on only when you need like snow, etc. and AWD is all the time.
I would like to know opinions of professionals.

I took a peek at http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/byclass.htm (those
would be the 'experts' and there doesnt seem to be a consistent
answer...the gearing is going to have more to do with this than
whether is is 2 4 or AWD.

Some AWD on the list have the same mpg as 2WD of the same model.  In
other cases they have worse mpg than 4WD and some better.
