My research suggests, but does not yet prove, that these are fictional
towns that Chinua Achebe created for the book.

Would proof that these are fictional towns be a sufficient answer?

Robowman --

I can't find any online, though the following Google search strategy
will give you some good maps of the tribes and areas that Achabe wrote
about:
"Chinua Achabe" map
"Chinua Achabe" Things Fall Apart map

For good detailed maps, you might want to try the Michelin series, as
they're detailed and inexpensive:

Perhaps you'll find the answer to your question in this book:

Robert M.Wren, Achebe?s World: The Historical and Cultural Context of
the Novels of Chinua Achebe. Washington, D.C.: Three Continents Press,
Inc., 1980.

Published in the UK by Longman (Longman studies in African literature).

According to
http://www.ivcc.edu/lockwood/Lig_201/Achebe/bib.html

"Wren includes in this book illustrations and maps. ... The maps are
useful for the locations of his novels."
