I am trying to create a set of categories of various ways that
contaminants move through soils and water. How do pollutants,
particularly from industrial land use, move through soils and water in
our environement? I am most interested in a site specific scale.

Hi Patrick

There is a vast literature and research done on the topic.
Lot of the research was done by US government interested
in remediation of super-fund sites.
Example:
http://www.hanford.gov/cp/gpp/

Left to itself, contamination moves WITH the ground water
for all practical purposes.
           (Diffusion exist but is negligible).

The groundwater moves in variety of ways.
Speed may vary from meters per year
to centimeters per century.

This example (slide 6)
http://maven.gtri.gatech.edu/ward/slide6.html

shows groundwater flowing down the hill and pushing water in the valley
to the right. Any contaminant in the groundwater will move with the water,
and speed depends on local climate and geology.

Is that what you mean by

          "site specific scale." ?

There are specific sites and techniques for cleaning up the sites,
(e.g. using steam to move it fast, when there is now water flow) e.g.

there are computer programs which say where to place pumps and cleaning
stations used to remove dissolved pollutants. There are conferences:
