The leadership of the Soviet Union, particularly under Stalin, was subject to periodic purges that were reflected in a succession of doctored photos of the assembled Commissars reviewing the May Day parade. I am searching for some of those images on the Web. |

Dear scholarandgentleman, The following page has two pairs of Stalin-era photographs, each consisting of an original and a retouched version from which someone is missing. In the first pair, Abel Yenukidze is retouched out of existence. In the second, it is Nikolai Yezhov who suffers this fate. Hoover Institution: Inside Stalin's Darkroom http://www.hooverdigest.org/982/conquest.html Leon Trotsky has been expunged from two photos shown on this page. Newseum: The Commissar Vanishes: Reinventing the Bolsheviks http://www.newseum.org/berlinwall/commissar_vanishes/reinventing.htm The preceding photographs are taken from the collection of David King, who has written an book about the Soviets' political photo alterations. Your links worked like a charm. The pix were different from what I was seeking -- I recall specifically the commissars lined up on the Kremlin Wall to watch the parade -- but are adequate for my intended use. |
