Hi, rossbj-ga.

As of May, 2002, the U.S. Department of Labor - Bureau of Labor
Statistics ( http://www.bls.gov/home.htm ) says there are
approximately 562,700 computer programmers in the U.S.

Their definition of a "Computer Programmer" is as follows:

"Convert project specifications and statements of problems and
procedures to detailed logical flow charts for coding into computer
language. Develop and write computer programs to store, locate, and
retrieve specific documents, data, and information. May program web
sites."

If you wish to generate a report, or keep track of this number as it
changes in the future, you can go to their website.
http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/srgate

From here, you must enter the Series ID for this report, which is
EU80737101.
The heading will look something like the following.

National Employment, Hours, and Earnings Series Catalog:
Series ID : EEU80737101
Not Seasonally Adjusted
Industry : Computer programming services
SIC Code : 7371
Data Type : ALL EMPLOYEES, THOUSANDS

I should have noted that the number for May 2002 (562,700) is still
considered preliminary. The number for April 2002 is 564,400.
