I have a .doc file on my computer which has suddenly stopped opening
in English, now it just opens in gibberish like this:

I believe that the encoding on the file got messed up.  Make sure that
it is correct (play around with the different types with it opened) 
It should be under Encoding.  Use the help index and it will find it

are you sure it is a .doc???

i think the file estension could be wrong. maybe its a different file
(exe, jpg) and it was renamed with a .doc extension

as the .doc file on your computer was working previously but it
stopped working now the reason might be a virus in your system.

1. just try to open any other word doc and check if it is working or not.
2. first open word and then open the file from file -> open option
rather than double clicking the .doc file and opening the file and
other files

If the problem persists try anti virus software.
