In the 12 months after Roger Bannister broke the four minute mile, how
many other runners ran the mile in less than four minutes? Also, how
many other runners broke the 4 minute mile in the 13th through 24th
month after Roger Bannister broke the barrier.

Clarification of Question by foster124-ga on 31 Jan 2006 08:47 PST
Thank you for the comment.

However, I am looking for the number of runners that ran the mile in
less than 4 minutes in the 12 months and 24 months after Roger
Bannister, whether or not they set a new world record in doing so.

The comment below provides only those runners who broke set a new
world record. However, I am looking for the total number of runners
who ran sub four minute miles.

Thanks again.

Hi foster124

In the first 12 months there were only 2

then 3rd, 4th & 5th in one race
"Before 28 May 1955 only two men (Roger Bannister and John Landy) had
run a mile in less than four minutes. On that date however, at the
British Games meeting in London three more men added their names to
this list when Laszlo Tabori (Hungary) won in 3min 59.0sec from Chris
Chataway (Great Britain) and Hewson (3min 59.8sec) third.

"Within two years on 1 June 1956 Ireland had its first member of the
sub-four club. Ronnie Delaney, a student at the famous Villanova
University in Pennsylvania, had finished his examinations and was keen
for a race. [...]The time of 3:59.0 made Delaney the seventh man under
four!

8th
Gunnar Nielsen 2nd June 1956 3:59.1

9th
Derek Ibbotson 4th August 1956 3:59.4
"On 4 August 1956, he became the 9th man in history to run a sub

Hello Cynthia

I believe I started off with 'Bannister' and 'Landy' and
sub OR break four minute mile
and then added relevant ordinals like first, second, third, etc
which I think first led me to Chataway as the second Brit which, when
I went checking for details, gave me Tabori and Hewson. Bailey I think
turned up similarly as the first to break it in the US. I then
proceeded to use combinations of names, which didn't reveal a simple
list of first n to break four minutes but did lead to the BIG list
which enabled me to work out the others.

Thanks! That makes sense. Sometimes even "I" forget to "search for the
answer," --not the question.
