Question ID: 439291
Who are the 200 largest consumer sowftware companies in the United
States (ranked by sales dollars) Any of the last 2 years are fine. I
would like games included. I would like enterprise software excluded
(unless there is a significant portion that is consumer)

bertamus2k-ga,

I rather doubt you'll find information to allow a ranking of consumer
software companies. Many of them are private, and don't release sales
information. And even the public companies usually don't separate out
sales of consumer software from other revenue figures.

That said, I have a list of more than 400 makers of games software.
Many of the companies on the list are not exclusively games
amnufacturers, but also distribute other types of consumer software
products. The prime example, of course, is Microsoft.

Take a look at the this excerpt from the list of about 100 companies.
Let me know if you'd like me to post the full list as an answer to
your question.

Cheers,

pafalafa-ga

No I am not looking for just games...I'd rather have a list without
games even if it is only public companies...I guess I understand what
you are saying...

How bout this list and the top 200 public software companies and I
can exclude those that are enterprise....that should do it

Request for Question Clarification by pafalafa-ga on 30 Jan 2006 19:48 PST
bertamus2k-ga,

Thanks...that helps to clarify what you're after.

How about if I provided two lists...one for the game companies, and a
second list of about 400 mainstream application software companies?

I've excerpted 100 companies from the second list, below, so let me
know how that looks to you.

Clarification of Question by bertamus2k-ga on 31 Jan 2006 08:57 PST
Not sure this is going to work since I am trying to find the top
200....What I did as a test was to go through amazon.com's top
software and I picked off the top 50 that worked fairly well. I think
going deeper at amazon and picking off the top 200 would be a better
process for both hardware and software.

Not sure if that is the kind of work you like though.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/new-for-you/top-sellers/-/software/229535/software/0/ref=pd_ts_sw_nav/104-0392783-1430353?ts-parent-id=

You could look through all the categories and pick off teh unique manufacturers
Similar procees for hardware.....

I think the amazon way will provide a better way....

Thanks for the update.

Here's another crack at a list off a shopping site (not Amazon,
however...it's a bit too unwieldy for me, I'm afraid).

These are the top software companies, in rank order. The list is
heavily consumer-product oriented, though there are clearly some
enterprise-level suppliers in here also. Here's the first 100...let

That's more like it!!! If you go down 300 to 400 and I back out the
enterprise I think that is good enough...please throw in what you
think are the top 50 or so games too

Thanks a ton

You're welcome a ton.

It turns out that shopping.com presents a lot of good information on
brands of software, along with data that allows for ranking. You can
see an example of it here:

http://www.shopping.com/xPP-software-games~all-9688_brand
List of manufacturers of games software

Using these lists, I was able to extract the Top 500 software products, and the
Top 100 games (with some overlap between the lists).

The lists are below. Let me know if there's anything else you need.
