Do you perhaps mean Maitreya, the incarnation of the Buddha who was to come?
If so, according to the online Cologne Sanskrit Dictionary sourced
from Monier Williams Sanskrit Dictionary, it is derived from the
Sanskrit 'maitri' - f. friendship , friendliness , benevolence , good
will (one of the 4 perfect states with Buddhists Dharmas. 16 ; cf.
MWB. 128).
