Word's recently used file list ? where does it live

We have several people using Word and Excel off of a terminal Server
(windows 2003 server, with all the latest patches and service packs).
The big problem I am having is that when a user goes to their recently
used file list, they don?t see ?their? recently used files, they see
recently used files from all users.

It is ask if everyone is sharing the same copy of word in the same
windows profile. What is even stranger is that this is happening to
some users but not to others. the others only see their recently used
files in the list.

My 2 questions are:
Where does this file get stored?
Are other Terminal Server users experiencing this problem?

Maybe if I go in and delete the file/folder it fix the problem.

thanx in advnce,

Hi sherpaj,

The MRU lists for MS Office are stored in the registry, Microsoft
explains how to clear the list best:

How to modify the Windows registry to clear the list of most recently
used (MRU) files in Office XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=312968
..."Delete the Most Recently Used Files List

!!Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause
serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating
system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that
result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at
your own risk...

To delete the most recently used files list, follow these steps:

1. In Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word: On the Tools menu, click
Options. On the General tab, clear the Recently used file list check
box.

2. Click Start and then click Run.

3. In the Open box, type regedit and then click OK.

4. Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common\Open Find

5. Within the Open Find subkey, navigate to the program for which you
want to clear the MRU file list. Within each program subkey, you find
another subkey named Settings. In that subkey, you find several
additional subkeys. Each of these subkeys contains an MRU list. For
example, the Microsoft Word\Settings subkey contains subkeys
(depending on past actions performed within Word) such as Insert File,
Save As, Open, or Modify Location. Beneath each subkey is another
subkey named File Name MRU.

6. To delete a specific MRU file list, delete the Value entry in any
File Name MRU subkey. ..."

This sounds like it might be your problem:

Security Settings and Related System Policies (near the bottom)
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011362671033.aspx

..."Do not keep history of recently opened documents

When this policy is enabled, the system does not save shortcuts to
most recently used (MRU) documents in the Start menu.

When this policy is enabled, applications must not keep any MRU lists.

Template: system.adm

Path: Administrative | Start Menu & Taskbar

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Value name: NoRecentDocsHistory

Data type: REG_DWORD

Value data:

0 // Display shortcuts in MRU list

1 // Do not display shortcuts in MRU list

This policy affects Office applications in the following ways:

Do not show MRU lists while the policy is enabled.

Do not save new entries into MRU lists (freeze the list) while the
policy is enabled, which means that after the policy is turned off,
the MRU list will not contain any files used while the policy was on,
but will contain files used before the policy was enabled.

If there is an MRU option in the Options dialog, it is grayed out
while the policy is enabled.

After the policy is turned off, the user MRU settings and the
application policy MRU settings are restored to the state before the
policy was enabled.
For example, if the number of MRU files was five (5) before the policy
was enabled, it becomes zero (0) when the policy is turned on, and
becomes five again when the policy is turned off.

If both the application MRU policy and the system MRU policy are
enabled, the system policy setting is used. ..."

The info is very useful. Go ahead and post it as an answer, but could
you add one part.

The main problem I am having is not that I want to hide or eliminate
the MRU lists , but it is that when a user goes to their recently used
file list, they don?t see ?their? recently used files, they see
recently used files from all users.

Could you search and see if other people have come across this problem
and how they solved it?

thanx

Playing with registry is little bit risky so install a software called
system mechanic. This will help you to clear registry in a secured
manner.
