I have the 2002 totals for all people that did some kind of
paddelsports  but not just kayak - if you have kayak in the US that
will be fine for 2002

I actually found more recent statistics for kayak participation in the
US from the  Nationwide Survey on Recreation and the Environment
(NSRE). Here are the figures:


Year : Number of People Who Do kayaking in the US

2004 : 15 million

Fall 1999 to Summer 2000 : 6.7 million
Fall 2000 to Summer 2001 : 8.2 million
Fall 2001 to Summer 2002 : 9.2 million
