I need to know the net revenue (or sales) for as many of the top 100
companies in the 2005 Fortune 500 for the last 10 years. This
information should come from the 10-k form filed by these companies
viewable on the SEC website (or a comparable source of information.
Please specify data source if not SEC filing). For instance, for
Exxon, the information for 2004 - 2000 looks like:

Sales and other operating revenue(1)
   $ 291,252   $ 237,054   $ 200,949   $ 208,715   $ 227,596

and can be seen at
http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/34088/000119312505038144/d10k.htm#tx74538_07

I do not need in depth work, so if a company is not easy to do it can
be skipped. It is not necessary to list companies that have not
provided information for less than 8 years. For instance
ConocoPhillips has not filed a 10-k every year for the last decade
(result of a merger) and so can be skipped. For a satisfactory answer
only 20% (20 companies) can be skipped. If a company is skipped,
please provide a reason. (If this requirement is too stringent please
let me know.) If more than 80 companies are covered, this better than
expected outcome will be compensated via a tip.

I would like the result in an Excel spreadsheet if at all possible
with one company per row.

A format that would easily be importable to Excel would also be acceptable.

johnie42-ga,

With all due respect, I think for the price offered, you can only
reasonably expect researchers to extract the data for perhaps a dozen
companies (and even that's pushing it).

Go through the process yourself, see how much time it takes to compile
a ten year record of sales, and then ask yourself if you would repeat
that process for a hundred (or more!) companies, for less than $70
(Google gets 25% of the fee, and researchers get the rest).

Please consider the scope of the task, and perhaps come back to us
with some revised parameters for your question.

Respectfully,

In one 10-k you can usually see 4 years of past revenues in addition
to the current year's revenue. I did do it for 6 companies, and based
on the time it took, I estimated the whole effort could be done in
about 5 hours. That would work out to about $14/hour, which I thought
was a pretty reasonable amount. If you still think the amount is too
low, what do you suggest I raise it to in order to attract interest?

Twenty companies an hour!!! You're fast!!!

But now that you've clarified the workload and pay rate, perhaps a
researcher will be willing to undertake the effort.

Best of luck,

paf

If there are any students out there who are affiliated with a large
University, you probably have acces to Wharton's WRDS database. It
can download all of this data into an excel format real quickly. (If
you put the ticker symbols inot an excel spreadsheet, it can be done
in under 5 minutes.)
