Hi sonrich, The ">" symbol is used to show that the value at the left of the symbol is greater than the value at the right of the symbol, as in: 2 > 1 10 > 6 According to a post in the Ask Dr. Math Forum, the mnemonic often used to remember this is "...an alligator - which is notoriously hungry - always wants to eat the larger number. 3 < 8 Alligator wants to eat the 8, so 3 is less than 8 5 > 2 Alligator wants to eat the 5, so 5 is greater than 2" Math Forum - Ask Dr. Math http://mathforum.org/library/drmath/view/58428.html Although that's how it's mainly used, you can sometimes find that symbol with only one number at its right (and no number at its left), as in "> 30". This actually means "greater than 30". For example, consider an hypothetical table that shows the number of people of a certain age in a country: Age | Number ------------------- 0-10 | 20,000 11-20 | 25,000 20-40 | 22,000 40-60 | 20,000 >60 | 10,000 This means that there are 10,000 people more than 60 years old. Similarly, if you see for example "< 30", this would mean "less than 30". Google search terms "greater than" math ://www.google.com/search?hl=es&q=%22greater+than%22+math&lr= I hope this helps! Best wishes, elmarto |

">" if read left to right, or right to left, has two sides: One side is wide or open. The other side is very narrow or closed or pointed. Anything on the side that is wide or open is greater/bigger/wider than anything on the closed or pointed side. And vice versa. x > y That means x is greater than y. It also means y is less than x. x < y That means x is less than y. Also, y is greater than x. |
