steve3603 --

I am happy to be able to give you a prompt answer to your very
specific question. According to the National Association of Realtors:

"There were a total of 6.1 million existing-home sales in 2003, up 9.6
percent from the previous record of 5.57 million in 2002."

Search Strategy:

I first found the 6.1 million number in a publication with the
following Google search:

"existing homes were sold" "in 2003" nationally
://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&q=%22existing+homes+were+sold%22+%22in+2003%22+nationally

Then, with a more focused Google search, I found the same figure cited
by the very authoritative source linked above, along with many other
sources:

homes "6.1 million" 2003
://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&q=homes+%226%2E1+million%22+2003

I am confident that this is the information you are seeking. if
anything is unclear, please ask for clarification before rating the
answer.
