I would have liked to see the researcher propose a specific answer, as
well as linking to further sites. I found the first link contained a
convincing answer, the second was fasciniating and demonstrated the
possible range of answers and the third link didn't seem relevant. It
was helpful to see the google search term used.

The current year is 2006.  The other calendars are quaint historical relics.

If Siliconsamurai had just proposed a single specific answer, say 2006
by our calendar, there would have been the risk that you would have
rejected it, claiming that this is the year 1414 by the Islamic
calendar, which is also true.  Hence his providing you with more
information than you seemed to expect, hardly a reason to consider the
question less than 5 star satisfactory.
