A close friend of mine has been certified my the Bryman School in
California as a massage therapist. She has been informed that in order
to be liscened by the state to practice this form of therapy, she
must describe herself as an "adult entertainer," and this offends
her moral sensibilities. She wants to change whatever law or regulation
specifies this designation, so that this therapy is free from the
stigma of this characterization. What would it take to do this, and
how should she go about it?

Hello dhkerby-ga,

California does not have state licensing for massage therapists. All
licensing and regulation is done by cities and counties and how
massage therapists are treated varies greatly. Where does your friend
want to practice?

My preliminary research shows that there is a long history on
establishing state licensing of massage therapists in California.
Would the current status on this satisfy the second part of your
question?

I look forward to your clarification.

My friend has completed her training at the Bryman School but tells me that
to get her license from the state she must describe herself in this unflattering
way. Which state agency licences massage therapists as "massage therapists"
per se? I would like to be able to tell her where to apply for this license.
Thank you.

My friend lives in Reseda, California, which is in the San Fernando Valley
in Los Angeles County. She wants to practice locally. Where should she
apply for the license?
