Do chimpanzees have an appendix, like humans do? If we share ~98% of our DNA (at least you do) with chimps then do chimps have an appendix? |

Dear grthumongous-ga, Yes, chimpanzees (genus Pan) and many other anthropoid apes (gibbons, orang-utans, and gorillas) possess a vermiform appendix in common with man. They are identical in that the vermiform appendix is a narrow, distinct apex, the apex has a thick-walled and there is a lymphoid concentration. This research article discussed the primates? appendix in great detail. I refer you to table 4 for confirmation of the above answer. 'The primate appendix: A reassessment by Rebecca E. Fisher' http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/cgi-bin/fulltext/76503640/HTMLSTART Other sources of information: "The chimpanzee colon is haustrated by three taeniae over its length; the taeniae continue along the cecum and terminate in a vermiform appendix (Figure 1-11) (Stevens and Hume, 1995)." Nutrient Requirements of Nonhuman Primates: Second Revised Edition (2003) Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources http://www.nap.edu/openbook/0309069890/html/24.html The appendix in humans often occurs in the debate surrounding evolution. This page may also interest you. It is well sourced should you require additional information. "A vermiform appendix is not unique to humans. It is found in all the hominoid apes, including humans, chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans, and gibbons, and it exists to varying degrees in several species of New World and Old World monkeys (Fisher 2000; Hill 1974; Scott 1980)." http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/vestiges/appendix.html I hope this answers your question. If it does not, or the answer is unclear, then please ask for clarification of this research before rating the answer. I shall respond to the clarification request as soon as I receive it. Regarding Dr. Zaius, if he were prodded by a physician seeking his appendix, I suspect that he'd say "Don't look for it... you may not like what you'll find." ;-) |

"Yes, chimpanzees (genus Pan) and many other anthropoid apes (gibbons, orang-utans, and gorillas) possess a vermiform appendix in common with man. " I am wondering what "anthropoid apes" don't "possess a vermiform appendix in common with man." It sounds like the Earth is literally peopled with anthropoid apes, many of which have vermiform appendixes, and some of which do not (since not all, only "many others" in addition to chimpanzees and humans, possess vermiform appendixes). Please list! Interesting though, that all the hominoid apes possess them, while only humans, chimps and "many others" amongst the anthropoid apes possess them. Well, this answers my curiosity about this site. |
