I am gathering information on Morkie Dogs (Maltese and Yorkie breed).
I was thinking about having one as a pet.
Could you tell me if there has been reported problems with the
Morkie's? How long have they been breeding these dogs?
Has there been more success breeding the Maltese with other breeds?

Are there reliable breeders in the San Francisco BayArea of the Morkie?

Hi

The morkie is not a recognized breed as such, some would class it as
one of the mixed breed "designer dogs".
There is likely to be little hard information about hereditary
conditions as many of the breeders who produce this type of dog often
do so 'on the quiet' to avoid the real or perceived threat of
ostracism by fellow breeders or their associations. For the same
reasons they are often more difficult to locate, relying on word of
mouth. If you know of anyone who has one, you might ask them,
otherwise try the local papers.

Both breeds do share tendencies to several hereditary conditions including:
Distichiasis
Legg-Calve-Perthes disease
Patellar Luxation
Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA)
Retinal Dysplasia
Tracheal Collapse
von Willebrands Disease
White Dog Shaker Syndrome

The incidence in crossbreeds for some of these would be decreased
where the inheritance is polygenic.

Reputable breeders will usually offer a health and genetic guarantee
for purebreeds and you would hope they would do the same for these,
check with the particular breeder. It would probably be advisible to
have any new puppy checked over by your vet as well.
