What are some failed projects in applied or developemental anthropology? I have found some information regarding the greening of Java and sisal agriculture in Brazil and would like further information on these projects as well as information on other projects that either achieved disasterous results or simply failed to improve conditions. |

Most projects such as your examples produced horrible side effects, the desired results are puny and/or direct and indirect costs vastly out weighed the benefits. ie we might put a few tons of calcium hydroxide at the top of tall chimneys and replace it daily by helocopter to remove several percent of the carbon dioxide from the flue gasses. What would we do with a few cubic miles of contaminated calcium carbonate, and how could we make a few cubic miles of calcium hyroxide without releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere? Even if we found a way the cost would be astronomical. Neil |
