I remember reading (where? sometime in the last few years)studies
indicating that (contrary to wildly held views),a group with the
HIGHEST SELF-ESTEEM, is found among PRISON INMATES. Can you help
located references to these sources?

Professor Roy F. Baumeister of Florida State conducted a study that
indicated that the most violent offenders were the most narcissistic
and had the greatest percieved levels of self-esteem. Does this
suffice as an answer?

"High self-esteem people tend to have little self control when things
are not going their way. This is from a study being done. Abusers
generally have high self-esteem. Baumeister study shows the highest
self-esteem scores come from people in prison. They appear to have no
respect for anyone else."

Great answer from Tutuzdad-ga. In today's climate of emphasis on the
wonderfulness of high self-esteem, many seem to have forgotten that
those who esteem themselves very highly often view other people as
worthless. The frightening fact is that the ones who esteem themselves
the most are sociopaths and psychopaths. There is such a thing as too
much self-esteem, despite what the New Age Psycho-Babblers want to
believe!

Scientific American has a copy of this article (December 20, 2004),
which stuck in my mind -

Exploding the Self-Esteem Myth

Boosting people's sense of self-worth has become a national
preoccupation. Yet surprisingly, researchshows that such efforts are
of little value in fostering academic progress or preventing
undesirable behavior
