I have read that Richard Nixon said in around 1968 'In the next 20 years we shall become much richer, but will we really be any richer as people - happier?' - what is the source for this ? | |

I'm pleased to have been able to help you find the source of your Nixon quote. I feel really old, since I actually remembered this from having heard the State of the Union address in 1970. Nixon didn't often say things that I found memorable, but he made an interesting point here. "Richard Nixon Annual Message to the Congress on the State of the Union. January 22nd, 1970... In the next 10 years we shall increase our wealth by 50 percent. The profound question is: Does this mean we will be 50 percent richer in a real sense, 50 percent better off, 50 percent happier?" The American Presidency Project http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/print.php?pid=2921 This is the Google search string that led me to the exact quote: Google Web Search: "richard nixon" "state of the union" richer happier ://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22richard+nixon%22+%22state+of+the+union%22+richer+happier Best regards, pinkfreud |
