Dear lou5555-ga;

Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question. Your
question seems to solicit opinion so with that in mind let me show you
this article published by none other than National Geographic (a
credible source indeed):

?Misquamicut State Beach, Westerly.

Mile for mile, tiny Rhode Island has as fine a string of public
beaches as any New England state. This one is its biggest and
best-seven miles of white sand, served by bathhouses, concessions, and
lifeguards, with special areas for board and bodysurfing. Nearby
Atlantic Avenue offers water slides and miniature golf for the kids.
Getting There Winnapaug Road off Route 1A, Westerly; +1 800 732 7636.?

I also recommend you consult this publication in which the author
rates beaches in terms of categories such as best surfing beach, best
overall beach, best novelty beach, best sports beach, best city beach,
best swimming beach, best walking beach, and best wilderness beach:

I used to surf off Newport at the end of Ruggles Avenue (Google for
intersection of Bellevue Ave and Ruggles Ave, go east a block or two
and you'll be in the water). It's a hideously rocky shore but beyond
the rock line, it's sweet.

It's also about a hazardous a place as any that exists and my more
sensible (older) self shudders at the thought of doing it now.

Still, you've got a stunning view, a Catholic college full of babes
that think they need to prove something, and a nightlife as good as
any real city.
