evgirl-ga,

There are a lot of statistics on personal vehicle use, but they don't
seem to readily allow an answer to your specific question -- personal
vehicle travel by one person, under 30 miles.

In general, the data show that, for the US in 2001:

--people travel an average of 35 miles per day in a car

--this amounts to average personal vehicle use of 23 miles per day
(since more than one person can be in the car, person miles are higher
than vehicle miles)

--43% of trips are one-person only

--personal trips account for more than 2 trillion miles per year of
travel in the US

There are other statistics as well, and a pretty interesting picture overall.

But as I said, it doesn't seem likely that one could tease out the
answer to your very specific question from these statistics.

Let me know your thought on how -- or whether -- to proceed on this.

Thanks.
