The "Life is good" product line was officially launched in 1994 by two
brothers, Bert and John Jacobs. Both are still very actively involved
with Life is good, Inc., which has administrative headquarters in
Boston, with manufacturing and distribution facilities in Derry, New
Hampshire.

"In 1989, Bert and John Jacobs designed their first tee shirt. They
knew nothing about the business. For five years, the brothers traveled
the East Coast, selling door-to-door in college dormitories. They
collected some good stories, but were not very prosperous. They lived
on peanut butter and jelly, slept in their van, and showered when they
could. Chicks were not impressed. By August of 1994, with a combined
sum of $78 in the bank, Bert and John considered getting a real job.

And then they created Jake [the company's smiling cartoon mascot], and
he showed them the way. Ten years later, Jake and the Life is good Ž
brand are spreading optimism nationwide.

Walk into the Life is good offices and warehouse in Derry, NH on a
given day, and 'workplace' is not a word that comes immediately to
mind. Carnival is more like it. Giant murals on bright-colored
walls, loud music, popcorn machines, and free-roaming dogs are early
indicators that you're not visiting traditional corporate America."

"Jake is the company's free-thinking, active, outdoorsy mascot who is
featured on brightly colored T-shirts, hats and other apparel doing
everything from hiking and playing tennis to eating watermelon and
lounging in an Adirondack chair with a cold one at his side.

He was born 11 years ago and takes his name from the nickname that
both Bert, 40, and John, 37, had in high school - a play on their
surname. The brothers, the youngest of six kids, credit him with their
success."

USA Today: Life is (very) good for brothers selling T-shirts
http://www.usatoday.com/money/smallbusiness/2005-07-09-life-is-good-brothers_x.htm

"Bert and John Jacobs, brothers and co-owners of LIFE IS GOOD, live
their trademark slogan, 'Do what you like, like what you do.' As karma
would have it, the pair went from living on sandwiches in college
cafeterias and selling T-shirts out of their Plymouth Voyager to
running a multimillion-dollar clothing company in Boston.

The Life Is Good garments feature Jake, a laid-back stick figure who
does everything from swinging a golf club to maintaining the lotus
position. Bert and John came up with the idea of Jake and "Life Is
Good" by creating sketches and text and then hanging them on the walls
of their apartment. They'd invite people over for parties to get their
reactions to the ideas."

"BERT & JOHN JACOBS, CO-FOUNDERS OF LIFE IS GOODŽ

Bert Jacobs is the Chief Executive Optimist of Life is goodŽ. He
focuses his energy on where the brand is going next. After graduating
from Villanova University in 1987 with a degree in advertising, Bert
enjoyed stints as a ski instructor, pizza delivery man, & substitute
teacher. He officially launched Life is goodŽ with his brother John in
1994...

John Jacobs is the Chief Creative Officer of Life is goodŽ. John
graduated in 1990 from the University of Massachusetts with dual
degrees in Art & English. He immediately began selling t-shirts after
college, & like Bert, worked as a substitute teacher for two years to
supplement his income during Life is good's infancy...

Bert & John, both single, are the youngest of six siblings from
Needham, MA. They credit their mother with teaching them to face the
bumps in the road with a smile. 'We believe in our team & our
message,' Bert says. 'For us, a sense of humor & a sense of humility
are the keys to continued success'."
