I'm own both the Ulead PhotoImpact 10 software (newest version) and
the OpenType font Myriad Pro SemiBold. Unfortunately, this version of
PhotoImpact does not support OpenType fonts. I'm looking for a font
conversion utility that will convert OpenType to TrueType. I've only
found Fontlab, but it's quite expensive and the cost isn't justified.
I'm looking for a much more affordable utility.

I don't know for sure, but the chcmap.exe on this page *might* help you...

Thanks for the suggestion, crythias-ga. I took a close look, but this
software won't convert OpenType to TrueType.

Kirk

Hi, Ross ~

I very much appreciate your help.

PfaEdit looks like a Linux/Unix solution, since I only see command
line install. I'm a WinXP user.

TransType doesn't support OpenType (I downloaded/installed the demo).

The about.com site was useful, since I now have a better handle on the
OpenType's relation to TrueType -- good background.

Again, it looks like the full FontLab would work, but the expense
doesn't make any sense.

I could just breakdown and upgrade to PhotoShop CS, but PhotoImpact 10
meets my needs (besides this font issue).

I'd even be willing to just buy the "Myriad Pro SemiBold" font in
TrueType, but I've only found it in OpenType, which I purchased.

Anyway, thanks again for your help.

Best,
Kirk out.

Update: For the record, CrossFont from http://www.acutesystems.com/
does not convert OpenType to TrueType.

Still looking for a solution, for which I'll be happy to pay.

Thanks,
Kirk

Also for the record, in case this thread might help someone else who
has the same needs in the future. I asked Monotype (via fonts.com)
what the cost would be for their company to convert "Myriad Pro
SemiBold" from OpenType to TrueType. Apparently, it can be done, but
is too expensive for me. Here's their email reply:

---------------------------

Hi Kirk,

Thank you for your inquiry with Monotype Imaging. The cost for this
conversion would be $600. Please let me know if you have any
questions.

From http://www.dafont.com/en/soft.php
I got http://www.font.to/Font-tools/TypeTool/ Which can convert some
OpenType to TrueType, if the OpenType is TrueType based. (Shareware,
$99)

Search: opentype truetype convert

I appreciate your continued help, crythias-ga. I've downloaded the
TypeTool 2 demo. However, it doesn't allow opening of .otf files. I
manually changed the filename extension of "Myriad Pro SemiBold" from
.otf to .ttf, and was able to open the font in TypeTool. However, when
I tried to resave as standard TrueType, it didn't appear to work. I'm
not sure if "Myriad Pro SemiBold" is based on TrueType, or not. So, I
signed up for the Fontlab on-line forum will place a presales question
there once they approve my membership request. If you, or anyone else,
hears of any other possible solution, that would be great.

Thanks, again.

Best,
Kirk

That you were able to open the font by renaming the file... have you
tried to do that? Rename the file and use the fonts folder to install
the font again?

Yes, I unistalled the font, renamed it .ttf, was able to open it,
resaved it to the same name with a .ttf extension, and reinstalled the
font. However, it then displayed incorrectly as "Myriad Pro Light" and
WinXP still identified it as OpenType. Perhaps there's something else
I should have done to convert it while in TypeTool. I looked through
all the menu items, but didn't see anything.

Thanks, again, for your help.

Kirk

Hello Kirkvan,

If you believe PfaEdit can do the job, I suggest you look at:
  http://x.cygwin.com/
and
  http://cygwin.com/
which describes how to add Unix / Linux capabilities to your Windows
machine (including WinXP). The first download (to get some basic
Cygwin capabilities) is relatively small but to get everything you
need to rebuild PfaEdit will take a while unless you have a high speed
internet connection.

I can walk you through the process if you want to consider this approach.

Thanks for your kind offer, Maniac. Actually, I'm not positive if
PfaEdit would do the job. I don't really want to take the time to
install/learn, but I would be happy to compensate someone who's
already running the OS to do the conversion.

Aloha,
Kirk

For the record, I've been considering just switching from PhotoImpact
to another graphics software package that supports OpenType fonts.
Paint Shop Pro is a no go.

-------------------------

Hi Kirk,

Paint Shop Pro only recognizes True Type fonts installed through the
Fonts utility in the Control Panel.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion on GIMP, crythias-g, which is new to me.
I'll go check it out.
