Question ID: 441181
Can anyone tell me how many centers in Europe currently
perform laparoscopic radical prostatectomies for the treatment of
prostate cancer? As I understand it, this is a relatively new
technique and only specialized centers perform it. I would like to get
an estimate of how many centers are actually performing the procedure.
If possible, figures for 2 recent years (2002 or later) will be most
helpful to see if the use of this procedure is growing.

Hello again lauren0125,

The da Vinci Surgical System

Quick Facts

?Established in 1995, Intuitive Surgical first introduced its flagship
product, the da Vinci® Surgical System, in 1999.

In 2000, the da Vinci Surgical System became the first robotic
surgical platform commercially available in the United States to be
cleared by the FDA for use in general laparoscopic surgery.

Today, Intuitive Surgical has more than 300 da Vinci Systems installed
in hospitals worldwide and employs more than 300 people.

Tens of thousands of da Vinci procedures have been performed around
the world ?in Europe, Asia and the Pacific Rim ? in a wide range of
specialties.

The first robotic prostatectomy in the world was performed in May 2000
in Frankfurt, Germany.

The first robotic prostatectomy in the United States was performed in
November 2000 in Richmond, Virginia.

More than 8,000 da Vinci Prostatectomies were performed in the United
States in 2004.

da Vinci Prostatectomy is the fastest-growing treatment for prostate
cancer in the United States.

da Vinci Prostatectomy has grown over 300% in the last two years. It
now accounts for roughly 15% of the surgical procedures performed to
treat prostate cancer in the United States and is expected to grow to
20% during 2005.

Patients routinely travel out of their respective healthcare markets
to receive care at leading hospitals that offer robotic surgical
technology. This emerging trend can be attributed to the measurable
clinical benefits that robotic-assisted, minimally invasive surgery
can offer patients."

Would the number of da Vinci Surgical Systems shipped in Europe in
2003 suit your purpose?

By the end of the year 2003 47 da Vinci Surgical Systems were shipped
in Europe, 148 un North America and 15 in the rest of the world.

Excerpt:

"Being a physician myself and after a great deal of thought and
research, I chose da Vinci Prostatectomy for the ability to have a
nerve-sparing procedure, improved continence, shorter recovery time,
and less pain. After my operation, I have had very little discomfort
and have experienced minimal alteration in my lifestyle. I am back at
work and functioning normally. I would highly recommend this to any
patient th the da Vinci Surgical System, surgeons win, hospitals win
and most importantly patients win.?

?We shipped 61 da Vinci Surgical Systems in 2003 and ended the year
with 210 systems worldwide: 148 in North America, 47 in Europe and 15
in the rest of the world.?

?The da Vinci Prostatectomy is following a classic and predictable
adoption curve driven by clinical outcomes and patient demand. This
procedure has become a very attractive treatment alternative for men
with prostate cancer, a career and practice builder for surgeons, and
a significant revenue generator for hospitals.?

Hi bobbie7,

This is getting close. Robotic prostatectomy is a subset of
laparoscopic radical prostatectomies (LRP). I think the number of
centers performing LRP will be much higher than the number of centers
performing robotic prostatectomies because the robotic equipment is
very expensive.
