I am interested in the harmful effects of large doses of vitamins. A list of the vitamins, the dose, how long it was taken, the effect seen, and any special conditions (study subjects had heart disease, were smokers, etc) is what I am looking for. Results from non-human subjects are ok as long as this is clearly indicated. I am peripherally interested in other supplements such as herbs, fish oil and the like (this info would be great to have but is not required for a satisfactory answer). I am only interested in data that have been published in scientific, peer-reviewed journals. I have access to many of these journals, so direct links to these articles are not necessary. Summaries of results or news articles are acceptable, so long as they contain a complete reference to the original article. |

I realise this is not exactly what you are asking for but there is an overview of Vitamin side-effects here: http://www.ksl.stanford.edu/people/kpfleger/multivitamins/cached/my.webmd.com_content_dmk_dmk_article_58947.html Additionally: Dietary supplements and functional foods: 2 sides of a coin? Charles H Halsted. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Vol. 77, No. 4, 1001S-1007S, April 2003; which is available here: http://intl.ajcn.org/cgi/content/full/77/4/1001S is good for a discussion of other supplements, including references and also mentions: "Understanding potential efficacies and hazards of dietary supplements is a daunting task for practitioners. For example, the Physicians? Desk Reference for Herbal Medicines lists 80 under letter A alone in its common name index and lists more than 350 side effects for all herbals (22). The recently published Physicians? Desk Reference for Nuritional Supplements describes more than 200 nonherbal supplements (vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and other products) cross-referenced to more than 300 potential side effects (23)." 22. Physicians? Desk Reference. PDR for herbal medicines. 1st ed. Montvale, NJ: Medical Economics, 1998. 23. Physicians? Desk Reference. PDR for nutritional supplements. 1st ed. Montvale, NJ: Medical Economics, 2001. this may be worth seeking out. Hope this is of some help. |
