Hi there,

I believe I've found both the cause and the solution for your problem.
The first thing you need to do, however, is find out what program on
your computer uses the HPI_COMMON.DLL file. To find that out:

In Windows XP, click Start > Search > For Files and Folders, click All
files and Folders, type in HPI_COMMON.dll and click search.
In other versions of Windows I believe it's just Start > Find and type
in the file name.

Once it finds the file on your computer you should be able to figure
out the program from its directory name.

Next, the best way to fix the problem is to uninstall the offending
program, restart your computer, and reinstall it making sure all other
programs are closed (including those in your system tray at the bottom
right of your screen).

This is what a FAQ for another program says about the problem
(different .dll name, same problem).

"Q: 30100043:When I attempt to open an album in the default database,
I get the following errors:
A: "The SHELF.EXE file is linked to missing export MFC42.DLL:6569."
"The FIXIT.EXE file is linked to missing export MFC42.DLL:6880."
"The ALBUM.EXE file is linked to missing export MFC42.DLL:6883.""
The SLIDE.EXE file is linked to missing export MFC42.DLL:6571."
"The SHOWPIC.EXE file is linked to missing export MFC42.DLL:6467."

These errors occurred because the file "MFC42.DLL" was in use at the
time of the initial setup (Wordpad, for example, uses this file). As a
result, the above applications were not registered. To fix the
problem, close all applications and re-run the PhotoRecall setup"

(://www.google.ca/search?q=cache:uIE6tLfzaxUC:www.photorecall.com/database%2520faqs.pdf+MFC42.DLL.6569&hl=en&ie=UTF-8)

I came across another solution (again, different program, same
problem) at http://www.intuit.com/support/quicken/2000/win/5141.html
which includes the uninstall/reinstall solution I described above, but
also has another cause which could be duplicate mfc42.dll files. You
might want to check that one out too, replacing any references to
Quicken with that from your program.

Hope that solves your problem, if you need any further clarification
please feel free to ask!

Hi there,
A couple of questions for you.
Which version of Windows are you using and how far in the instructions
below did you get?
Have you tried using the search/find feature of your OS to find the
HPI_COMMON.DLL file?
Were you able to find out the name of the program that uses this file?
etc...
Please let me know so we can figure out how to get rid of your
problem.

Hi there,

It appears that the files are part of the driver installation for a HP
scanner or printer or both.

First thing to try: While I was looking around HP's website I found a
reference to a MFC42.dll patch, so I clicked the link, which brought
me to this page: http://www.hp.com/cposupport/printers/support_doc/bpd06592.html.
See the section called "Downloading and installing the MFC42.DLL
patch", and follow the instructions to download the patch and install
it. I think this will fix your problem (YAY!), but it might not. Once
you restart your computer see if you still get the message. If so, you
can try a couple of other things.

I'd suggest that you download updated software from
http://www.hp.com/cposupport/software.html. You can type in the name
of your scanner/printer and it'll give you a page where you can click
your operating system. In your case, click Windows 98 and then click
the driver for your scanner/printer under the description column on
the next page. If under the REV column it says CD-ROM it means that
there's no updated software and you'll need to find the CD that came
with your hardware to reinstall the drivers.

If you can download the newest drivers for your hardware, or you have
the CD I suggest you uninstall your current software first. To do
that, double-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop and click
the Control panel icon. Next, click the Add-Remove programs icon. By
scrolling down the list you should find a reference to HP scanner or
printer drivers/software. Click the remove button and follow the
instructions (if any) to purge the software. Then restart your
computer. Once you've done that, you can install the new drivers you
downloaded by double clicking on the file and following the
instructions (if you need more help the HP website where you got the
files can guide you through installation) or insert your CD-ROM and
follow the instructions.

Hopefully that'll get rid of your problem, but if it doesn't there's
one more thing you can try.

From reading the description of your problem I'd say the problem with
your scanner software trying to start when you start your computer (if
you don't have a scanner just ignore this). To get rid of this error,
you can click Start, click Run, type in "msconfig" without the quotes.
This opens up the System Configuration tool. Click the Startup tab and
you should see something similar to your .DLL name in the Startup Item
or Command columns. Once you find the right item, you can click the
checkbox beside it to clear it, then click okay. It might give you the
option to restart, so do so.

The trade off of this method means that you'll need to run your
scanner software from the Start menu whenever you want to scan
something.

Hope this helps!

Hi deadlychiapet-ga RE: Case ID #3070928

I just wanted to let you know that even though I tried all of your
inststructions I was still unable to fix the problem.

Then I finally used my noggin'and I sent an e-mail to emachines and
asked for their assistance as that is the type of machine I have.
They sent me the following instructions and it did in fact clear up
all my problems. I thought you might like to know what they told me,
just in case someone else has a similar problem.

1. Go to START > Run

2. In the Open line type MSCONFIG

3. Click OK. This will take you to the System Configuration
Utility. If you
look along the top there will be a row of tabs, one, of which is
STARTUP

4. Click on the STARTUP tab, this should take you to a list of
programs with
checks to the left of each program

5. Remove all checks EXCEPT for SCAN REGISTRY, TASK MONITOR, SYSTEM
TRAY, and
any anti-virus program you may have

6. Click on APPLY and then OK. System will ask you to reboot your
system,
    click YES

All the programs in the STARTUP tab, which have checks to the left of
them, are loaded as soon as you turn your system on. By removing the
checks you are not removing the program. You are telling WINDOWS not
to load the program right away. If you do want to run one of those
programs you can still run it from Start > Programs. It will either
have a folder of its ow or will be in Disabled Startup Items.

This worked and all is well. The only thing I do not understand is
why your office would not give me a refund. I feel that you did try
to help but it did not work. Anyway I just wanted to let you know
and the thank you for your assistance and kindness during my delemma.

Thanks.

Hi,
I'm sorry I was unable to help you find the answer to your problem,
but I'm glad that you figured it out anyways. The reason they denied
your refund request was because you asked for the refund before you
tried getting clarification.
I believe that if you ask for a refund again or email them at
answers-editors@google.com and explain what happened they'll grant
your request.

All you need to do is down load a free RegCleaner and remove the link
in your
What does RegCleaner do?

RegCleaner deletes registry entries. You can delete DLLs with the
Shared DLLs feature, and shortcut files with the Startup feature. You
don't even have to know what the registry actually is to be able to
use RegCleaner.

Why should I use RegCleaner?

You should use RegCleaner because it's a good idea to keep the
registry as clean as possible. Here are some examples to help you
understand how RegCleaner can truly help you:

1. Say you've accidentally destroyed a nice shareware program what has
a 30-day trial period. Later on, when you notice that it's been
destroyed, you try reinstalling it, only to find out that you can't,
because the program thinks that you're just trying to get another 30
days. If you first remove the program's registry entries, however, you
may very well be able to reinstall the software and recover your trial
period again.

2. You've found that your favorite program is an older version, and
you want to download the latest whiz-bang version. The program,
however, doesn't provide any uninstall utility, so you simply destroy
its files and cross your fingers. But, as fate would have it, when you
try to install the latest version, you see a dialog box such as this:
"Please uninstall the old version of this program before attempting to
run this installation."

Great, now what?

Hang on; you simply remove the old program's registry entries with
RegCleaner! Now you can continue installing the newer program version
that you wanted to have originally (I'm using the word "programs", but
most of these examples will apply equally to games and other software
as well).

NOTE: Some programs register file types (such as: '.txt'), so when
you've deleted the program, Windows reports an error when you try to
run files that are registered to that program. RegCleaner removes,
when possible, all of the registrations done by that program. Now when
you try to run files that were registered to it, Windows will bring up
a dialog box and ask what program you now want to use with this
particular file type. You can then select a new association.
