Question ID: 441441
We have a computer network based on windows. One of the computers is
used for backup purposes. Last week we changed all the pci lan devices
and the main swicth for upgrade to 1Gbps. Since then, we could no more
copy .doc files(office word 2003) to this computer, a message error
"can't reach network address" appears. The hard drive in this computer
is shared with "total control" permision for all users, we did'nt
change any software configuration when changing the hard. Why? Why
only word files? How can I solve this problem? If the word docs are
compressed (rar, zip) then we can copy...Thanks!

Thanks people,

I will try deleting temp files but... Why this was not happening in
the past? The only new thing in the system is the hardware (pci LAN
cards in all workstations and new switch)...

We are runnig Xp Pro, we have users with password, same soft/spack (I
didn't try the .doc rename staff yet). What I don't understand is what
special thing is related to word files, because with the rest of file
types there is no trouble...

By the way, the domain admin is on a Windows NT Server...

Thanks,

The ip configuration is ok, the connectivity is good, we can transfer
files (even rar-zip-compressed word files) but when you try to copy
.doc files the system says "the net add was not reachable" or simply
hangs. It must be related with something about office files that is
"sentivive" to hardware replacement (remember this was the only chabge
made in the system).
I hope to find the solution!

Thanks ydeologi,

Yes, we are usin McAfee, we have sp2 on all PC, domain with users/passw...
When I try renaming the files, the same.
It must be something related with the kind (the extension) of the
file, don't you think?

Sir,

Kindly delete all temp files example if you file name is file1.doc
it will create $file1.doc or ~$file1.doc as image files(shadows) delete all
shuch file and try copying, this problem may occur due to search
indexing on your desktop.
making a zip or rar for transferring may be a good option but at times
this may also give error if yes then use diamond utility for
compressing the files as .CAB.

Do you have antivirus software running?

Are you running XP Home or Professional? The same version and service
pack on all computers?

Do you have usernames with passwords configured?

If you create a .DOC file with Notepad or some other program -- not a
true Word document -- and attempt to copy it, do you get the same
error?

I would guess that the backup servers' network address (IP address)
has changed as you have swapped out your switch. Either that or the
server does not actually have connectivity to the new switch.

You say you cannot backup .DOC files, is that the only think affected?
can you still copy other files?

Try this...

On the server go to a dos prompt and type "ipconfig /all", somewhere
in the list should be an entry like "Ethernet adapter Local Area
Connection", what does it say beneath that line?

On a client go do a dos prompt and type "ping XXX" where XXX is the
name of your server. You should get output similar to the following
(which I get when I ping my server).

Pinging backupserver [192.168.10.110] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 192.168.10.110: bytes=32 time=18ms TTL=249
Reply from 192.168.10.110: bytes=32 time=20ms TTL=249
Reply from 192.168.10.110: bytes=32 time=24ms TTL=249
Reply from 192.168.10.110: bytes=32 time=18ms TTL=249

Ping statistics for 192.168.10.110:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 18ms, Maximum = 24ms, Average = 20ms

Let me know how you get on and hopefully I can help you further.

I would think this is caused by the MIME mappings on that computer
pointing to an application (Word) on a different machine. Check your
MIME mappings.

uninstall McCrashee uh McCaffee

try transferring a doc file now

get norton 2003

mCcrashee and newer nortons contain lame firewalls

norton 2003 does not however it has the same virus protection
as newer nortons

docs files can contain macro's (mini programs) that viruses can abuse
firewalls protect you from macro viruses, and give you headaches

everytime a new virus comes out I make a bundle off of McCrashee machines
