Coumarin is an anticoagulant sometimes used in rat poison.

I am baffled by 'tricoci'. It might help to know where you encountered this term.

The Tricoci came from a vet's report on possible explanations for a
traumatic death of a dog recently.

Also, if you type in Coumarin tricoci on Google, it comes up with only
one unaccessible reference.

Dogs are very resilient when it comes to food poisoning. They evolved
pretty much on eating rotten meat.

The last part of ?tricoci,? is probably meant to be ?cocci,?
describing a ball like bacteria. Cocci comes in many formations, and
it wouldn?t surprise me if there was a species that came as a group of
three, but I doubt there is a bacterium with the name Tricoccus.

I also highly doubt food poisoning in the form of infection killed
your dog, but if it was, it would probably occur in the intestines
rather than the stomach. Food poison affecting the stomach usually
passes quickly without major complication. If it occurred in the
lower intestines, then the symptoms would be a severe change in stool
consistence over several days.

The only food poisoning I could see killing a dog is botulism. There
wouldn?t be many symptoms, except heavy drooling and paralysis before
death. Botulism is caused by neurotoxins found in improperly canned
food, the toxins are created by bacteria, but the bacteria don?t
infect the victim.

Your dog probably died from coumarin poisoning, which as PinkFreud
stated is found in rat poison. Dogs are known to eat rat poison. The
likelihood of death increases with smaller dogs, and would manifest
itself with symptoms like bloody stool, vomit and maybe bleeding from
the gums.

It was not my dog, but a constituents (I am President of a Humane
Society). The vet initially said rat poison, but when she later heard
there might be legal action against a possible culprit, she added the
other possibilities of e-coli, perfringens, and the coumarin tricocci
or tricoci.

I will share your latest post with the dog's guardian, and see if he
can focus more on the symtoms in terms of your description.

Thanks

can anyone answer whether or not it (rat posion) affects a dog's
breath? The reason I ask is that I lost my beloved Lhasa Apso on
Christmas morning, she had become very listless and was unable to
walk, stopped eating and urinating, and passed away a couple of days
later in my arms. But her breath was overpowering and very, gosh, I
can't even describe it, but it smelled like death. (Not that I've
ever smelled death before but that's the only thing I can use to
describe it. Now my dog Rusty has the same smell and has been very
listless all day. I have a neighbor I've been having trouble with,
his Rotts broke down a privacy fence and broke down my chain link
fence and attacked my dog, and I called the humane society on him.
Now I'm terrified he's retaliating, even though the humane society
won't do anything to him. Please, I'm desparate! I'm taking Rusty to
the vet in the morning, but I can't take him to the emergency hospital
until the am...thanks if anyone is out there...

I don't know anything about the bad breath, as the dog that was likely
poisoned was not mine, but I will check and get back to you. This is
a tragedy for you, regardless.
