Question: Has copyright protection of both text and illustrations in
above journal run their course, i.e., are they now in the public
domain? (Google Answers found eleven of the most important articles
and illustrations of the May and August 1888 Revista trim. reprinted
in Trabajos escogidos, Jiminez and Molina, 1924, last month. I
obtained the book but saw no mention of copyright or ownership.)

I have the impression that there may be reluctance (or a stonewall)
that have either inhibited (or brought to a halt) investigation into
my question. Perhaps I have not offered sufficient monetary reward but
this is a matter I can adjust upward and generously.
It is a sticky question whose answer means a good deal to me. I am
aware that neither the European institution that has the full set of
journals (there were only a May and an August 1888 volume) will allow
the originals to be viewed. One must view only a microfilm of it.
This of course does not mean that it is not in the public domain; it
may only mean that an original is so rare that it's better to keep it
in a dark place with controlled humidity. The author died in 1934.
Several of his children had died by then and of the one or two who
were alive in 1934 were adults who are most unlikely still to be
living. It's hard to believe that the material is not in the public
domain unless, perchance, there was successful effort to renew the
copyright by the use of some loophole or other. As far as I know, the
nation involved is a signatory to the Berne Treaty.
                                     Thank you
