Windows Vista is so far out, I think you should wait until after its
arrived, and MS has issued at least the first Service Pack (if history
is any guage, there will be at least one major spin of the OS). If
you're using Windows Vista release as the milestone against purchasing
a new computer, then you've got plenty of time. I'd hold on this
question and do this research after Vista SP1. That will give hardware
vendors plenty of time to fully support the OS and the OS to have some
of the major bugs worked out. Between now and then, anything could
happen to change one's opinion of any the computer vendors.

Just my two cents.

After doing research about new computers, i decided to go for a
computer which had XP but was capable of using Vista. Although these
spoecs are a little higher than those issued as the guidline by
Microsoft for Vista I recommends you choose a computer with the
minimum specs:
AMD Anthlon x2 3800
1024RAM
ATi X600 256Mb
200GB Hard Drive.
Hope that helps

You don't want to game. Okay than I would recommend you a Intel
processor. It's good in converting video and audio files. I would take
a Intel Pentium D 820 or higher.I would wait, too.If you dont want to
wait, I would recommend following specifications:

Processor:Intel Pentium D 840 2x3,2Ghz, 200Mhz Fsb, 2x1Mb Cache, Dual
Core, Socket 775 (BTX)
Ram: 1024Mb DDR2-Ram (Pc2-4200) or (Pc2-5300)
Graphics: Ati X700 or Nvidia GeForce 6600 or newer von Ati X1600 or
newer Nvidia GeFOrce 7600 all with 256 GDDR3-Ram
Mainboard: ASUS P5WD2-E Premium, i975X (Dual-DDR2 800, UDMA/133,
Serial-ATA II 3Gb/s RAID, Dual-Gigabit-LAN, FireWire, USB 2.0, 2x PCI
Express)
Harddisk: 200GB S-ATA (I or II) or with more GB, or even 2HD in Raid 0
Mode (Samsung Spin Poin P123, S-ATA II (SP2504C)
Drive:DVD Double Layer Burner and a normal CD Drive
A case with a good power supply 300W and higher.

I hope I could help you
