Question ID: 442048
I'm looking for software or templates that would allow me to set up a
non-ftp access updating mechanisim for a few different web sites.
So far, I'm only proficient at dreamweaver html websites- not java or
any other dynamic programming languages.
Here's the situation I'm looking for: I create and host a web site
for a client. The client has a few secretaries (with no knowlede or
desire to gain knowledge of html or even html editors and of course
they wouldn't want them to have ftp access to the site) who would, if
I can find the right way to do it, go to one specific page on the site
I've developed for them, enter an id and pasword, type in or cut and
copy their text only updates such as results of a recent contest,
minutes of a meeting, announcment of upcoming event, and then press
enter and that information appears just above the previous update,
creating a sort of archive. Or even better, they have the option to
replace an existing update or just add a new one.
Ideally, this is something I can embed in the website- I really don't
want them to have to link to another site to do this.
So maybe I can do this in dreamweaver using forms and jump buttons? or
maybe a a bulletin board? or a weblog?
I'm open to ideas- can you tell me is there a common name or term for
what I am describing?
I'd be happy if you can suggest some options and where I can find more
info about them and purchase/download them. Or maybe you know just
the thing for this and can point me to where I can get it.
This is new to me so not sure I am doing a good job describing what I
need so I'll be happy to clarify the question if needed.

I create my sites using dreamweaver on a mac with osx

By the way, I am asking this question because I'm looking for a
solution that saves me time- so I don't have to spend so much time
updating websites for these clients when all they need is basic text
updates. Of course, when real design changes or photos or something
need changing. I'll do that via ftp...

What you want can't be done with html. You need something dynamic,
i.e. php, asp, etc. There are plenty of free scripts out there than
you can implement into your website, but knowledge of php, asp, and
maybe even mysql in some cases is required.

You might wish to take a look at http://www.opensourcecms.com/ to try
out different content management systems.

The kicker is that the solutions are free and generally update only
using a web browser, regardless of OS.

snookers is correct.

PHP with Mysql, is exactly what you are looking for. That way the
user can just enter the info like normal typing and click a submit
button and it's live.

You may want to also look into a HTML blog scenario that you can
intergrate if you don't want to learn or have experience with PHP.
