Soleimani is a family name to many living accross the world. I happen to be one of them, though born in England. I've traced the name and found many in Iran and Saudi Arabia. The Saudi branch has little information of how the Family migrated from Khorasan as some claim. I want more information on the origin of the name, the ancesstors, and the family. I found some leads leading to Afghanistan, but so far it seems most of the people carrying this name live in Iran. I also found some leads to Khorasan province. I need concrete information on the family's origin. is it Arab as one iranian claims? is it Parthan/Afghan? I know that one famous figure in Iran was related to the former shah from the Kdjar tribes? are all soliemani's kadjar, or is this just one case of name similartiy? Another lead refered to "soliemani Arab Nomads" inhabiting in the Semnan Province Iran. I also found that many scintists, engineers, filmakers carry this name. I come from a family of scientists myself. Could their any relation to earlier persian scientists? Conclusion I want the exact orgin of this family and ethnic group. I need to know if the Saudi branch is related to the iranian, and how, why they migrated, and when. | |

in the persian language and specially on iran the "i" at the end of the family name usually refers to one place , for exemple Tehrani is someone from tehran, so it must be the same thing for the case of Soleimani: Sulêymanîyah (Slêmanî): Also spelled SULEYMANIYAH, town and muhafazah (governorate), southern Kurdistan, one of three muhafazat (governorates) making up the Kurdish Autonomous Region. The town, which is the capital of the muhafazah, lies on the Av-i (Kurdish: river) Tancero( spelled TANJERO) and on the lower slopes of the Azmar Dagh range; it experiences severe temperature extremes in summer and winter. The town was founded in 1781 by a local ruler(ebrahim pasha), who named it after the then his fathers name: Soleiman Pasha.Sulêymanîyah is a trade centre for local farm products, and through it passes trade between Baghdad and Tabriz, Iran. Sulêymanîyah is a centre of Kurdish nationalism. Sulêymanîyah muhafazah is 6,083 sq mi (15,756 sq km) in area; entirely mountainous, and is part of the historic region of Kurdistan. Tobacco, fruit, and cereals are grown, and livestock raising is important. There is a new tobacco-processing plant in Sulêymanîyah built since the 1974 Law of Autonomy. The University of Sulaymaniyah opened in 1968 with instruction in Kurdish, Arabic, and English. It has faculties in engineering, agriculture, the arts, science, and medicine. A technical institute for medical technology was founded in 1973. In the late 1970s the muhafazah had several hospitals, health centres, and branch health clinics. There has been a construction boom in tourist housing for visitors to enjoy the cool summer mountain air. The area was long disputed by Persia and the Ottoman Empire. hope it does help . |

That could imply that there are many (unrelated) now extended families that once assumed the name of the place when they moved from there. (I don't know how family names are formed in Persian or Kurdish.) Soleimani could have been an attractive choice, as it brings to mind the great Ottoman rulers of similar name. |
