Cannot open any of my Excel or Word files. Program just hangs with
hour glass figure. I can open Excel but just cannot open existing
files. Running under XP with Microsoft Office Basic Edition 2003.
Just before this problem I had a message from Norton that I had a
Trojan infection. I followed their directions and ran Norton in safe
mode but did not get any error messages. Have reinstalled Microsoft
office but I still have problem. Have tried to open with the repair
and data recovery feature of Excel but that did not work, still just
hangs. I copied some word and excel files to a CD and was able to run
the Excel files on my daughters computer using Quattro, she does not
have Excel. Did not try running the word files on her computer. I am
hoping for a solution that does not require reloading everything.

Stop running Nortons Anti Virus and see if you can open them.

I tried to run after disabling Norton Anti-Virus and it did not work.
However after reading the comment, I disabled Norton Security and it
now appears to work. However, since I have to disable Norton
Security, it is not a total solution.

Hi

If you just want to view the Office-Files only, just get simple viewer
program at Microsoft.com.
If you want modify them, I guess the best way is Reloading your system
for saving your time. Or,try some Spyware-Remove software list below.

Thanks very much for the comments. I seem to have solved my problem
by disabling Microsoft Spyware and the Windows firewall. The clue
about disabling Norton lead me in the right direction. Thanks again.

Actually disabling AntiSpyware was probably a work around. I'm
betting that trojan horse attached itself to your normal.dot template
for word, and placed itself in your XLSTART directory. I would go to
C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates and move any templates out of there and put
them in your temp directory and also go to C:\Documents and
Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART and move
any contents to your temp folder as well. Then attempt to load up
some of your documents.

Another thing that used to work in older versions of Office was to go
to Start - Run - and type in "WINWORD.EXE /UNREGSERVER" and then when
that completes, do the same, and run "WINWORD.EXE /REGSERVER". Do the
same thing with EXCEL.EXE.

snevey-ga was right.. moving normal.dot from the template dir solved the problem.
