How many pressure treated wood plants exist in the US? And who are
they? Ideally, I would like a list of pressure treated wood suppliers
that have shifted from CCA treated wood into the "new" wood
preservatives (ACQ, CA, SBX) after the voluntary withdrawl of CCA wood
into consumer (residential and recreational) applications.

blucken-ga,

Are you looking for information on actual pressure-treated wood
**plants**, or on the companies that make pressure-treated wood in the
US?

A single company may have several plants, and it's usually easier to
get information on the company than on the plants themselves, so I
just wanted to check.

Thanks.

We actually need the plants that treat the wood - "treaters" not those
that produce the wood.
Treaters take the wood and chemically treat it to prevent corrosion.
Formerly it was a CCA treatment etc.
It might be possible for someone to produce the wood and treat it -
UNiversal Forest Products is an example.
We also think that there are independent treaters -

thanks

blucken-ga,

Thanks for the clarification.

Please have a look at this link and let me know what you think:

http://www.bancca.org/CCA_Alternatives/CCA_Alternatives_lum.htm

The CCA-alternatives are a bit more complex than it might seem at
first, since there manufacturers are pushing wood alternatives,
non-wood alternatives, and wood-polymer mixes.

Are you interested in only 100% wood products? If so, what sorts of
information about the companies listed at this site would you need?

Is the list here satisfactory to you, or do you suspect there are
other companies also treating lumber that aren't listed here?

Any additional perspective you can offer would be a help in conducting
my research. Thanks.

I'm actually looking for an all-encompassing list of treaters. The
AWPA (American Wood Preservers' Assocation) in 1997 published a report
that said there were 457 treaters in the US. So I am assuming there
might have been a few plant closures or consolidations, but I have to
believe the number of treaters out there is 300-400. And I am
concerned with wood products only. Plastic lumber or decking is an
alternative to treating, but I want to know who is treating the wood.

Hello again.

Thanks for the extra detail...it was a huge help.

I've identified a list of more than 600 industrial facilities in the
US that indicate that their primary SIC code is 2491 --
Pressure-Treated / Preserved Wood Manufacturers. The actual
description of this industry category is here:

=====
http://www.osha.gov/pls/imis/sic_manual.display?id=552&tab=description

2491 Wood Preserving

Establishments primarily engaged in treating wood, sawed or planed in
other establishments, with creosote or other preservatives to prevent
decay and to protect against fire and insects. This industry also
includes the cutting, treating, and selling of poles, posts, and
piling, but establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing other
wood products, which they may also treat with preservatives, are not
included.
=====

The first few entries on the list look like this:

A & K COOPERAGE CO INC	RT A SOUTH	HIGBEE	MO	65257

ACE LOG & LUMBER	6390 HIGHWAY A	HIGBEE	MO	65257

ACE POLE CO INC	US HWY 82 NORTHEAST	WAYCROSS	GA	31501

ACME WOOD PRESERVING INCORPORATED	200 ROSELAND AVENUE	PRINCETON	WV	247401717

ALABAMA GEORGIA WOOD PRESERVING COMPANY 15206 US HIGHWAY 431
SOUTH	LAFAYETTE	AL	36862

ALAN SEES	MARSHFIELD	MARSHFIELD	MO	65706

ALBEMARLE WOOD PRESERVING PLANT INCORPORATED	1509 SNUGGS PARK
ROAD	ALBEMARLE	NC	28001

ALEXANDER MANUFACTURING INCORPORATED	802 SE 199TH ST.	PORTLAND	OR	97233

The list includes quite a number of companies with multiple listings, such as:

UNIVERSAL FOREST PRODUCTS	2600 PRECISION DRIVE	HARRISONVILLE	MO	64701

UNIVERSAL FOREST PRODUCTS #228	ROUTE 9 WEST	RANSON	WV	25438

UNIVERSAL FOREST PRODUCTS EASTERN COMPANY INCORPORATED	358 WOODMILL
RD.	SALISBURY	NC	28145

UNIVERSAL FOREST PRODUCTS EASTERN COMPANY INCORPORATED	ROUTE 191 &
33	STOCKERTOWN	PA	18083

UNIVERSAL FOREST PRODUCTS INCORPORATED	ROYER STREET	GORDON	PA	17936

UNIVERSAL FOREST PRODUCTS INCORPORATED	102 PENINSULA DRIVE	NORTH EAST	MD	21901

UNIVERSAL FOREST PRODUCTS SOUTHERN COMPANY INCORPORATED	105 PROGRESS
RD.	AUBURNDALE	FL	33823

In addition to the 600+ facilities with a primary SIC code of 2491,
there are another 800 or so companies listed that also include SIC
2491 in their identification, but not necessarily as their primary
function.

I'd be glad to provide the entire list as an answer to your question.

However, I must note that I have no way of verifying the accuracy of
the self-reported SIC codes. The list certainly LOOKS like a
comprehensive list of wood-treating firms in the US, but they it
includes pressure-treating as well as creosote treaters (I don't know
if this is a pressure operation or not). There may very well be
companies on the list that don't do much in the way wood treating, or
that handle -- rather than manufacture -- pressure-treated lumber.

Let me know what you think.

The link is temporary, so please save the file to your local drive.
The first column indicates whether SIC 2491 is the firm's primary SIC
or not.

By the way, the file was created through the EPA's "Facility Registry System" at:

http://www.epa.gov/enviro/html/fii/ez.html

It's an awfully handy tool for identifying individual industrial
plants around the country.

Let me know if you have any problem with the above link, or if there's
anything else you need.
