A CD of "Stillwater" is included in the director's cut of Cameron
Crowe's film "Almost Famous". Nancy Wilson and Crowe write four of
the songs on the CD; two are written by Peter Frampton and others.
Who are the actual musicians on each cut? What studio was the
recording made in? Are the songs in the film the same recordings that
are on the CD? Any other pertinent information about this recording
and the personnel involved in its' creation would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks!

The good news... I can tell you the names of musicians who played and
sang on the Stillwater tracks. I can also tell you the studio(s)
where the tracks were recorded.

The bad news... I can't give you a track-by-track breakdown of the
musicians. Do you have any reason to believe that the personnel
varied among the tracks? Also, I have no idea whether or not the
songs are the same "takes" that appear in the film.

Are you interested in the information that I can provide?

Hello.

The songs feature:

Mike McCready - guitar
Marti Frederiksen - vocals
John Bayless - bass
Ben Smith - drums

The songs were recorded at Stepping Stone Studios in Seattle and
Village Recorders in L.A..

"Wilson was also on hand to create, play on and produce the Stillwater
repertoire; the band contributes the song "Fever Dog" to the "Almost
Famous" soundtrack. Crowe collaborated with Wilson in crafting three
of the five songs Stillwater performs on screen, including "Fever
Dog"; Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready is also heard on the
Crowe/Wilson material (the "real" Stillwater is completed by singer
Marti Frederiksen and Lovemongers bassist John Bayless and drummer Ben
Smith)."

"from an Entertainment Weekly article: "If you find yourself enjoying
a few songs by a phony band called Stillwater, don't be TOO
embarrassed. The 1973 mustache collective featured in writer/ director
Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous has a legitimate rock pedigree. Pearl
Jam's Mike McCready is the real talent behind Russell Hammond, the
band's charismatic lead guitarist (played by Billy Crudup), while ex
Heart guitarist Nancy Wilson (Crowe's wife) plays rhythm guitar for
the group. What's more, '70s vet Peter Frampton penned several of the
Stillwater tunes heard in the movie, and Wilson and Crowe cowrote the
band's bass driven anthem 'Feverdog,' which made the film's
soundtrack." Also contributing to the Stillwater sound include Marti
Frederiksen (Motherland) on vocals, John Bayless (The Lovemongers) on
bass, and Ben Smith (also of The Lovemongers) on drums. Hope that
helps!"

Interestingly, the 6-track CD from the DVD set seems to have exactly
the same track list as an ultra-rare CD sampler that was distributed
at the Almost Famous wrap party. See this discussion thread at
