A 14-year-old female with congenital cataracts in both eyes underwent
phacoemulsification surgery with intraocular lens implant on January
28, 2000 in right eye. After developing posterior capsular
opacification, she underwent YAG laser capsulotomy in her right eye on
March 26, 2002 and again on the same eye on April 8, 2002 due to the
thickness of the POC. The power range for the second YAG procedure
was 5.1, total number of exposure was 30 and exposure time was 156.3.
Since this YAG procedure to date (Feb. 2006) the patient has
experienced floaters and I am told they are not due to retinal damage
but rather the result of pieces of posterior capsule lodging in the
vitreous gel.
I have done some research and can not find support for this
explanation of continuing floaters due to fragments in the vitreous
gel for years after the YAG procedure as in this patient?s case.
Under the circumstances, a vitrectomy may be possible solution but
before undergoing this procedure I wanted to know if there was any
support for this theory. Can you provide any references, etc.? |
