I am trying to find a breeder of Bichon Frise who would be willing to let my male 8 year old Bichon Frise have puppies (for me to keep) with a female Bichon Frise of theirs. I would need to see the papers and bloodline info of the female. Does anything like this exist? |

If you keep the puppies, what's in this for the breeder? I doubt that any breeder who isn't a close personal friend would do this for no compensation. |

@Pink I don't think that this is a cash conservation question. It puts me in mind of the three D's (Death, Divorce, Disease) that are the usual reasons for selling something worth hanging onto. ie: It is probably hard to buy a good Bichon Bitch. @Teesa - my guess is that you have 'tin openers' for the pups (see the amusing book Felidae for the meaning, but you should guess it). You probably do not /want/ a professional kennel breeder, better an owner of a suitable bitch who would like a stud, a good home for the pups and a good bit of cash to cover eventualities - be generous. Pups development depends on their environment, and if I have correctly guessed what you are up to, then it is essential that the pups you distribute to your friends and family are 'well brought up'. Early education beats pedigree. My approach would be to scour dog's homes (people who have died or moved away), perhaps also small ads (opportunists exploiting the former, you'll find them in the latter), you will land up with two dogs, but that might be rather enjoyable. If I have correctly guessed your motivation, then I think it is a nice idea, family reunions will be noisy, probably the odd scrap, but that is pretty standard anyway. |

frde: I have tried to find a female Bichon outside of breeders, but either have trouble locating one or they are already neutered. Also, I don't want to have the female at my home during the pregnancy period, which is why I thought a breeder might be a good idea--they are used to the whole thing. |

@Teesa I think I understand the problem. Was my guess at the purpose/destination of the pups correct ? From my memories, dogs are not much of a problem while pregnant, up until the last minute, when you really need a vet for peace of mind, but I guess you have physical problems, like not enough room, or not happy keeping two on a leash. I think what you need is a 'small scale' breeder who is in your area - if cash is not a major constraint, then it should not be too much of a problem - I think I would scour the small ads in the local papers - this needs a little thought |

frde: yes you are correct about my intentions. Also, yes, it is my mother who is disabled, so having 2 dogs around would be a bit much, especially if the new dog was much more active than our current one. I have tried to find breeders, most however seem to be out of state (I'm in NJ) and mostly want to sell their own dogs/pups :( |

Nice idea I've found two breeders in NJ from a list on the Bichon Frise Owners Club http://www.bichon.org/breeders.htm You've probably checked them out, but even so. Personally I would write them a letter, not 'phone or Email, old fashioned communication sticks in the mind. Hmm.. thinking about it, I might visit them first pretending to be looking for a female pup, to get a feel for their setup and attempt to strike up a relationship. The other thing is to get friendly with your vet, find out whether he/she reckons that bitches should have pups before the snip, I believe that some do. It is unlikely that someone with exactly what you want will pop up here, but you might get a few interesting suggestions. Incidentally, I doubt that a breeder would turn down an offer to buy a litter, my main concern would be avoiding a 'puppy farm'. This snippet from that web site is interesting <quote> You should be aware that most breeders who provide the proper care find they often lose money instead of making money. If they are lucky, they may break even. If they are unlucky, they may not only lose money but may also lose a beloved pet when they find too late that she was not a good breeding prospect </quote> It suggests that breeders are fanatics, which is exactly what you are after. By the way, I'm just a member of the 'peanut gallery', in other words a bystander that is either helpful or sarcastic (depending on the question) - the researchers' names are in blue - we peanut chuckers are not able to provide 'answers' - just comments. - we are the court jesters - but jesters have their talents If you want a really amazing reaction, a high priced question will get the official answerers burning the telephone - but my impression is that you just need a few nudges in the right direction. If you are adept at Internet searching, then try a search on a few selected phrases, there is a lot up there on the web, if not then I'll make some suggestions. For some odd reason, your question rather intrigues me Perhaps this question I posted explains why :- http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=427122 I'm sure what you want is very feasible, and rather a good idea. |

frde, thank you for all your help! I will definitely follow up on your suggestions. The only problem I know I will run up against (which has ahppened before) is that many breeders only want champion line dogs to breed with theirs. They say that if your dog isn't of a champion line he could pass down lots of bad traits to the puppies and they don't want that (even though I would be taking the puppies). I can understand their point, but it seems unfair that only champions would be allowed to breed, my guy is a champion to me :) Well...wish me luck! Thank you again! |

I can see the point about avoiding bad traits - although my understanding is that pedigrees tend to develop bad traits as a result of inbreeding I'm pretty sure that when you locate a fanatical breeder, they'll cooperate, like me, I reckon they will appreciate what you are up to - it's a very nice idea Best of Luck - and if you would like me to dig around a bit more, I would be very happy to do so. Regards. |

frde, any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Unfortunately, all the breeders I talked to so far won't do what I am looking for. The whole "breeding to standard / only breeding champions" is the response I'm getting (and some are rude too ;.;). They say a lot of genetic testing is involved (I wouldn't mind getting that done on my dog), but because he doesn't have any champions in his bloodline it seems they don't want to spare one of their females when they could be producing more champions I guess :/ |

I see, it is a matter of widening the net - or changing the apparent proposition I'll have a little think about this |
