Nobody knows!  But then again, there's not much credible evidence that
it works any more effectively than massage.  In fact, sham acupuncture
produces the same results as acupuncture applied by a trained
individual.  I do remember seeing one study that showed a change in
brain activity (don't remember specifics, this was a while ago), but
the significance of that is unknown.  Still, it's effectiveness is
nothing of note.
