Hi rwc37, Actually this question seems to be tossing about the Internet. You're not the only one asking. To Answer your question, soup is eaten. Why? Because it's not served in a beverage glass. A straw would seem silly, no? Sometimes you see people drinking broth, when all the goodies are gone from the soup, however that is considered bad manners. AN ARTICLE: DO YOU EAT OR DRINK SOUP?... http://corporate.tips4me.com/preview_main.asp?tip=bizetiq_dine1 ..."Is the suspense killing you? Okay, you eat soup. Soup, usually the first course, is served either in a wide, shallow dish, or a smaller bowl, resting on an under-plate. -- Spoon the soup away from you, towards the centre of the bowl. -- Sip from the side of the spoon. Never put the whole spoon in your mouth or slurp. Noisy eating is better placed in the farmyard, rather than the dining table! -- Tip the bowl away from you and spoon the soup across the bowl to get at the last bits. -- After finishing the soup, place the spoon in the under-plate, or in the soup plate at a 10:20 position. A poll on a teen web site: Do you eat or drink soup? http://teenforums.studentcenter.org/viewtopic.php?p=140855 do we eat or drink soup? http://www.translatorscafe.com/cafe/MegaBBS/thread-view.asp?threadid=2682&messageid=36130 In Poland, we eat it. Unless it is clear bortsch or, less likely, broth in which case we drink it. I hope this helps... If I can be of further assistance in regards to eating soup, please don't hesitate to ask via the "Request For Clarification" feature... ~~Cynthia Search terms used at Google: "eat or drink soup" |

One always EATS soup because usually it contains some solid particles, possibly croutons, vegetables, rice, dead or dying flies, etc. Gentlefolk such as myself also use a SPOON for this purpose. Of course, some less refined types lift the bowl to their lips and ... But one's butler should always ask any such offender to desist. |

Depends where you live. There are languages in the world, where there is no distiction between eating and drinking as in English. Regards, cheyuta -------------- |

Hi, Omni I have been to Japan and I found the Japanese to be perfect hosts. Pity about their food. Almost as bad as American. |

in china and japan it is considered perfectly polite to slurp one's soup. reason being, dishes such as ramen noodles can be quite hot....slurping allows the air sucked in to cool the liquids slightly as they enter the mouth. it may seem strange but give it a go with your clam chowder! |
