I'm running the current version of iTunes for Windows. I'm also
running McAfee Privacy Service and Microsoft Antispyware. I've been
downloading video files from the iTunes music store for quite some
time with no problems. Last night, I downloaded a video file with no
trouble, then tried to download another. This time, the error message
read: "Unable to download purchased music. An unknown error occurred
(OxFFFE7958). Please check back later using the check for purchased
music. . . " I tried again using the "check for purchased music"
function, but no dice. The file appears to be downloading fine; it's
just at the end that something seems to go wrong. A couple of times
I've received an error message that says the iTunes Music Store is
unavailable.

I've looked into this a little bit, and I've seen suggestions that
unknown errors on iTunes are often input/output errors (whatever that
means), that this might be a problem with the authorizations on my
iTunes Music file (although the instructions to check these
authorizations on Apple's support site don't make sense to me--they
just seem to be wrong), and that the problem might be an
incompatibility between iTunes and McAfee Privacy Service. I've tried
to address each of these things, but nothing seems to work. I'm not
sure if I'm not addressing the problem properly, or if it's even a
problem with me.

A new version of iTunes has just been released, I think. I've
downloaded it (hoping it would somehow solve my problem), but the
difficulty began before I downloaded the new version of iTunes. I may
have automatically downloaded an update to McAfee Privacy Service
that's causing the problem; I'm just not sure. I'm not sure what to
do next, and Apple support is utterly hopeless, as everyone knows.
I'm not even sure if the problem is on my end, or on theirs.

Can someone help me resolve this problem? Thanks so much.

celina...

Per the only post returned in a Google search for this error,
found on the nemov.net blog, the problem is not on your end:

"My purchase went through but I received a OxFFFE7958 error
at the end of the download. I was told to 'please try again
later.' This is where I discovered the terrible iTunes Music
Store support. The only way to contact support is via an
online submission form. After using that, I received a
confirmation and later an email telling me they were working
on the problem. That was a week ago. So I had to resubmit
the problem again. There is no information on how to secure
a refund and I?m astonished at how poor they have responded
to the problem. It seems like nine days is a long time to
sort out a $1.99 purchase, but what do I know?"

As a result, I doubt there's anything more a researcher can
tell you to help resolve the problem.

Let me know where this takes you...

sublime and hardtofindbooks,

Thanks so much for checking this out. I'm relieved to discover this
is probably not on my end; I was feeling like an idiot. But if it's
all iTunes, well, never mind then. Everyone knows I'll grow old and
wither away before iTunes support will offer any help.

So I'm free! Hurrah!

Thanks again. I'll leave the question up a bit longer, in case anyone
else turns up something.

I can offer no solution I'm afraid. It appears you are not alone and
the problem may be cross platform, see:
