What are some folktales and fairy tales that would have been known to
the people of Flanders around 1300? I'd like to see the actual text,
in English, of at least three stories that would have been considered
familiar folktales in that time and place, up to but positively no
later than 1350. They would have to have been well enough known that
people of all classes would be acquainted with them.
Preferred but not required:
- Text of at least one in medieval Flemish as well as English--The
English being an actual translation of the Flemish and not just
another version of the same tale.
- At least one a recognizable relative of, if not an exact counterpart
of, a tale familiar in our culture, such as one that was collected by
the Brothers Grimm or retold by Charles Perreault.
- At least one shown to have a French version in the same time period;
that is, people of France and people of Flanders to be familiar with
versions of what is essentially the same story.
Thank you,
