Hi saylor-ga,
The option that you mentioned for removing IE 6.0 under add/remove
progams doesn't work (ie Internet Explorer can't be uninstalled in
Windows XP) because Microsoft has only made it possible to remove user
access to IE while leaving the Internet Explorer code "intact and
fully functional to ensure the functionality of programs and operating
system functions that rely on it." The following page from the
Microsoft Knowledge Database explains step-by-step how to use one of
two methods for reinstalling or repairing Internet Explorer when you
are having problems with Internet Explorer because of "damaged files
or missing registration information." The first method describes the
option of reinstalling or repairing Windows XP. The second details how
to edit the registry to reinstall IE 6.0. Both methods can be tricky,
but personally I would recommend that you try the first method first,
since changes to the registry can possibly cause unrecoverable errors.

One caveat - editing the registry, should you decide to go this route,
is easy, but should only be undertaken with caution. Be sure to read
all of the instructions first and make a backup of the registry
(preferably on a floppy) before you begin. You should also be sure you
understand how to restore the registry should a problem occur. The
following article from the Microsoft Knowledge Database explains more
about the registry and how to work with it:

This one explains how to back up, edit and restore the registry in
Windows XP:

I hope this provides the solution to your problem. If reinstalling
Internet Explorer 6.0 turns out not to solve your problem, please feel
free to ask for further clarification.
