I need to know how much each company in the top 50 of the 2005 Fortune
500 spend on Research and Development for the last 10 years. This
information should come from the 10-k form filed by these companies
viewable on the SEC website (or a comparable source of information.
Please specify data source if not SEC filing).
Not all companies list R&D costs in their filings. Those that do not
can be skipped. Some companies group R&D with other things. In that
case just list the total amount as R&D. I would like the result in an
Excel spreadsheet if at all possible
with one company per row.

The link is for the top 100 companies, but for this question I only
need the R&D for the top 50.

Hi johnie42-ga,
I started on this and quickly realized how massive a task this is.
Typically when a question involves such a large amount of work, your
chances of having it answered are greater if you split it up into
several questions (I would suggest 5 in your case: 1-10, 11-20, etc).
If you do this, post a clarification here referring to the new
questions and then cancel the question.
Also, the fact that you are looking for data 10 years back makes the
task far more complex (about 10 times more). I would like to work on
this for you, but the list price just doesn't justify the time it
would take.
If you have any questions regarding my comments please do ask - we're here to help.
Thanks,
answerguru-ga

How much do you think I should ask for this? I based the fee on doing
by figuring it would be pretty easy to do at least 5 companies in an
hour, which meant 10 hours of work. That would be $11.25/hour once
you took off Google's take.

Hi!
I agree with my fellow researcher answerguru. The task is too enormous
at this point. The biggest problem I think here is the 10 year span.
Knowing this would you settle for the most current or 1-year figure
for the 50 companies?
Thanks.

No, I need 10 years. I have attempted this task for the first few
companies and 10 years wasn't really that hard. The SEC site allows
you to search for the 10-k filing and will show you each of them for
the last 10 years. Searching for "Research" generally took me to the
section I wanted quickly, and usually each 10-k showed the R&D for the
current year plus at least 3 years previous.
I'll increase the amount offered to $200. If that doesn't get any
takers I'll just have to spend the time doing it myself.
