I need help! I am John Neely in North Carolina. I have recently found
a vintage pennant which I cannot find out anything about. It is grey
and blue and has the letters CSL Embroidered on it followed by the
Word COLUMBIAN. Can anyone help me out with this puzzle. I thought
that it might be an early George Washington University pennant, which
was fomerly Columbian College but I do not know. Help if you can!
thanks John Neely

I want to thank everyone who is helping me out on this. This is my
first question so I am learning as I go. The pennant which has the CSL
Columbian format is a very old Item. The pennant is felt but has been
done with great care the Word COLUMBIAN is individual letters which
are sewn on and raised and the boarder is also pieced as well. The
pennant is 40 inches long and 16 inches wide at the ties(there are
three instead of the customary two). I also believe that the felt is
wool instead of cotton. How long has the New York Softball League been
around? The size of this makes me think that it was a fixture of the
park and not for individuals to wave but I really don't know. Thanks
again for your help anything else that could be found out would be
appreciated! John Neely

There is a CSL, "Columbian Softball League" in New York City.

Of course, that suggestion may be "a little out in left field," so to speak.

There also once was a Canadian Soccer League

I can rule out Robertskelton's suggestion of the Canadian Soccer
League. It operated in the 80's and early 90's, and the teams did not
sell pennants in the American style, to my knowledge.

I lived in Vancouver in the league's halcyon days and followed the
fortunes of the mighty Vancouver 86'ers, who dominated the league for
most of its existence. Great memories, and thank you rs for the
flashback, but not pertinent to the question.
