I am trying to remember the name of a board game from the late 1970's
or early 1980's where the board contained various countries of the
world, and the game markers were little airplanes that you would use
to mark the countries that you controlled. The only thing I can
really rememberabout the game itself was that three of the countries
included Copenhagen, Crete, and Majorica, and I remember that Crete
was not necessarily considered a good thing to win. For years I
guess I thought that game was Risk, but now as an adult I am looking
at my first Risk board, and I realize that the game I remember is
absolutely not Risk. What game was it? Help? |

There are a ton of Risk spin-off games, with names like Supremacy,
Domination, Global War, and so on. It's hard to know which one you
might be thinking of, but have a look at Axis and Allies:

and let me know what you think.

The game is not any of the Axis & Allies versions, as A&A is very much
a "war" game, with various types of artillery, etc., and the game I am
thinking was "softer", even though it did involve taking "coverage" of
various cities and countries. But it was not a "war" game, per se,
along the lines of A&A or Avalon Hill-type games.
It also was not Stratego, as was suggested. I have looked through the
pictures on a number of vintage game sites, but cannot find the very
colorful board and airplane markers that were part of this particular
"world" game.

Sorry, the Jet World game is definitely not it. The game I am
thinking of had a "Risk-like" map as the board, and again, I can only
remember a few details about the board and game. The city of
Copenhagen was on a part of the board that was colored blue, and Crete
I believe was part of the board shaded in red. I thought perhaps it
was some sort of "Junior Risk" version, but I have only seen one
Junior Risk, and it was a Narnia theme, not it. I will keep looking
at the pictures on www.boardgamegeeks.com though per the good
suggestions provided here!!!

All right, then.
Take a look at this link:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist.php3?action=view&listid=552
which is a list of all the Global Games at the board games site --
pretty much everything they have with a world map. Note that there
are three pages here, so click "Next" to see all the games listed.
Let me know if your game pops up.

I appreciate the extract from boardgamegeek.com, but unfortunately,
none of those games have the city/country game board that I am
remembering. I have no idea why I remember Copenhagen, Crete, and
Majorica specifically (and now I am also rememembering that Lisbon was
called out), but other than those names and the bold colors of the
regions on the game board itself, no other details are coming to mind.
One thing I can clarify is that the airplane game markers might not
have been part of the game I am thinking of -- When I saw that "Take
Off" game I recognized the airplane markers that go with that game, so
it is possible I had my mental wires crossed there. But the
city/country game board (and the memory that getting sent to Crete was
similar to going to Jail in Monopoly) are about the only specifics I
can remember. My husband tells me I am getting obsessive about this
now, so I'm about at the point where I might have to let it go. But
I am going to continue going through the full index of all of the
games in the website you provided JUST IN CASE!
