I have two computers and would like to network them through a wireless
router. One is a Dell Desktop, it has a linksys wireless b USB
network adaptor. It is running on Windows XP home with the latest
service pack downloads. The other is a IBM Thinkpad with a centrino
chip. It is on Windows XP PRO with all of the latest updates. We have
a linksys wireless b broadband router which is connect to a motorola
surfboard cable modem. We subscribe to comcast for our cable internet.
So far, we have been able to share the wireless internet connection
between the two computers without a problem. I set this up
myself and did not pay Comcast extra to provide internet sharing.
While I have no problems sharing the internet connection, I have not
been able to get the two computers to talk to each other. In other
words, I cannot share files or printers. When I click on my network
places, the shared files i have designated from the other computer are
never listed. When I tried to View network computers, I get a message
that says "MSHOME is not accessible. You might not have permission to
use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server
to find out if you have access permissions." I have run the home
network wizard several times. I have pinged the computers and
everything seems fine on that end too. The computers use to be able to
talk to one other (when I lived in LA and used Verizon DSL). Any
advice on how I can make the computers be friendly with one another
again?

Thanks!

Check your firewall settings on both machines and make sure they are
sharing at least one folder or printer. Also make sure you really have
a router and not just an access point connected to your cable modem.

Since you ping each computer from the other with no problems, there
shouldn't be any firewall problems.

Step 1:
You will need to make sure both computers are setup on the same Workgroup name.
Right click My Computer and go to properties. Or (Windows Key + Pause)
The Network Identification tab will show the Workgroup name. Change
one to match the other if they are different

Step 2:
Make sure there's an admin account on each computer that is named
'EXACTLY' the same. Since XP Pro offers a little better user
management, you'll probably want to make one on the Pro machine match
the one on the Home machine.

That should do it.
